OK, have now played a few hours of it. by Fullofkittens 09/10/2017, 3:57pm PDT
It's really...catchy. It's the first game in a long time, for me, that made me stay up way later than I realized just because I was having a good time. (Bought on Friday)

The concept is really simple: as you said it's just an Arma mod with a shrinking map. However, the execution makes it fun various ways:

  • The map itself is really really big. So big that if you start outside the shrinking zone you have to really haul ass to get to the safe zone (or find a vehicle, which is a risk/reward mechanic of its own). This means that although there are 100 players each round it still doesn't feel like a crazy melee, there's enough map that it feels like the creepy abandoned island from Lost.

  • The action organizes itself into phases:
    • You start out picking your drop area by jumping from a plane, and then when you hit the ground it's a mad dash for something, anything to kill the 2-3 other people that are landing in the same little set of buildings as you. This is a super tense part of the game and is what you get, guaranteed, every game, a minute after you hit the Play button: there is a machine gun on the table and a man that wants to murder you: will you reach it first, or will you die in 5 seconds?

    • If you do manage to kill the few people around you, you get to loot the area and start thinking about how to move to a safer place closer to the final target area. The best way I can describe this is "it's a real time 3PS version of XCOM:EU's tactical battles. It's all paranoia, managing line of sight, and listening intently for footsteps, as you creep from tree to tree and from house to house trying not to let anyone get behind you. This part is pretty enjoyable too although at my skill level I keep failing and getting killed during this stage.

    • Presumably the endgame where you've set yourself up with sweet gear and a good position and its a combination of mopping up the unlucky majority who are racing into the kill zone, and killing or being killed amongst those who remain. Who knows, haven't gotten this far yet (best game so far: position 26, 3 kills)

  • The combination of the big map and the large variety of gear means that - although the concept is simple - there's enough to learn that it feels like expertise matters.

I dunno, I'm still in a honeymoon phase but I look forward to getting a few rounds in this evening.
