This - in clear violation of the laws of gravity - can help you hit the ground faster than your opponents: your parachute will open a little lower and it's a little easier to choose your ground target. You can also speed your descent after the parachute opens in the same way, though I've found I hit my target a little more reliably by circling than by trying to hit it straight on.
