Both have the same basic plot beats, including a trip into the bombed out lawless zone, and an encounter with a way too stunning streetwalker(did Fancher do an uncredited rewrite?). But where BR deals with more adult themes like making the most of the time you've got, GITS 2017 wants to be Blade Runner AND a Marvel-esque four quadrant pic, where what passes for an existential crisis is "oh no I'm an ultimate weapon with amnesia who's being used for evil!". And a Marvel-esque wish fulfillment ending, which also doesn't work in the Blade Runner milieu. Deckard and K are good at what they do, but they're still cogs. They don't single handedly bring down Tyrell Corporation and whatever the successor to Tyrell is called.
Even the "reunion with the long lost family member" beat in both movies is a kiddy/adult contrast. In GITS 2017, the family member is the person who's most important when you're a kid: mom. In 2049, the family member is the person who's most important when you're an adult: your child. |
