One of the plot twists that went nowhere was that the anti-war activists were right. The spears were attracting the monsters and the captain was desperate to keep that secret covered up. Then in season 2 she just kills all her political enemies without consequence and that whole plot thread shriveled on the vine so we could have dozens of scenes of the green haired girl buying plastic models of mechs at the nerd store, even though she literally commands the real things for her day job.
