Bob was supposed to be a much more minor character: he was going to be the Barb of season two, and get offed after a couple of scenes. But then they got Sean Astin and everybody just loved having him on set so they wrote in more scenes.

I personally liked that he was kind of becoming an honorary member of the Scooby gang by the time they offed him. He was revealed as a truly good guy who believed his girlfriend when she said her son was possessed and helped as much as he could. It mattered when he died.

I think one of the things I found most striking about season 2 was that - in contrast to S1 where they just peppered the whole thing with a melange of fan servicey references - each episode was a direct tribute to something else and was very overt about it. There's an Alien episode, there's a Jurassic Park episode ("This is BASIC! I KNOW THIS."), the controversial Warriors tribute, and the season finale is The Return of the King (Steve and the kids are Aragorn and the western armies, creating a distraction so that Frodo Eleven can get to Mount Doom). I didn't see it as a problem in S1 and I don't think it's a problem in S2 either, it's just how Stranger Things works, they like homages.

I asked the question "would Stranger Things still work if you didn't get the semiotic aspect of it? If you'd never seen the movies it's assembled out of?" A friend's opinion: "Absolutely, can you think of another show or even a movie with a cast of kids that's as good as Stranger Things?" There aren't many.
