Initial impressions after the first half-dozen episodes. by Nostalgic Canadian Pseudo-Review 11/14/2017, 12:26am PST
Not bad! It's two pleasant-sounding people discussing a show I like. But, crucially, not a show I've seen anytime recently. So I remember just enough about the episodes to follow the conversation, but not enough that I want to call the podcast studio and UM ACTUALLY them to death. If I have one complaint, it's that they focus too much on their own experiences with the work, and not enough on the work itself. This is pretty much the same complaint I have about every podcast, and it's ironic considering the direction this post is about to take.

What was your first X-File? I think mine was the one about the killer computer, which Wikipedia tells me was S01E07, 'Ghost in the Machine'. I didn't watch the show from the beginning (despite being on deck for any kind of televised science fiction, from TekWar to Time Trax) because I was under the mistaken impression it was an anthology series, like that boring 1980s Twilight Zone. I must've decided to stick around after Brisco County Jr on... October 29 1993 (thanks again, Wikipedia) out of some precious childhood Halloween spirit. I was BLOWN AWAY. It's like I saw the Great Pumpkin, I loved it. Can you imagine how fucking great the next episode, 'Ice', would've been to a nine year old completely unfamiliar with the danger paranoia aliens pose to arctic research stations? That's a foundational thing, and I got to experience it for the first time with Mulder and Scully. They Mickey's Christmas Carol'd me! (For our younger readers, that's like being Muppet Christmas Carol'd, introduced to a great work of literature through an unapologetically derivative one that's still somehow also really good.)

The X-Files is a series that's easy to never rewatch, though, because every time I get the urge they come out with some new godawful movie or whatever to remind me why I stopped watching in the first place. I'll save that for when me and Scully are retired and living together in England pretending to be English, she's probably got all the tapes anyway. "I was so beautiful once." "You still are beautiful Scully, to me." *tender boning noises*
