I myself think you're mostly alright and that Stranger Things is like watered down Stephen King meets watered down cosmic horror. The Upside Down bits in both seasons come off like what happens when the sort of people who wrote bog-standard slavishly imitative pastiches for Lovecraft fanzines back in the 1970s-80s decided to whip own their "original" tales of cosmic dread together and congratulated themselves for merely leaving out details eldritch tomes with foreboding names and god-beings with names like "Jrech'gthatew".
