First, they got rid of the option to view search results in the order or how recently they joined. It was a great way to see new people instead of the same 30 you always see and weren't interested in. Also you got to message people right when they joined and avoided wasting your time sending messages to inactive accounts. To make up for this, they put in a "pass" feature where you could click that you weren't interested on someone's profile and they would be hidden in all future search results. One, the feature didn't work and you still saw them, and two, it was way too much of a time consuming pain in the ass to click pass on every single search result profile you weren't interested in. This was all done because they claimed newly joined women were overwhelmed by messages.
Next they changed it so that it was mandatory to click "Like" on someone's profile before you could even send them a message. "Liking" was something only done by passive aggressive dudes and fatties. Anyone with a shred of confidence just sent a message. Now everyone looks like a chump. Again, this was done because they claimed women were receiving too many messages and more filtering barriers of entry were needed.
So they just implemented a change where sent messages will not show up in the recipient's inbox. Instead, once you send a message (after liking their profile), if that person just happens to see your profile during a search or "double take" (their version of like/pass Tinder), then a tiny icon will show up on your tiny profile thumbnail that you have sent them a message. If they click on your profile, then "Like" you, your message will now show up in their inbox. You will only be told that someone sent you a message if you just happen to come across their profile in a search. The official reasoning? Women were receiving too many messages.
The real reasons for all this? Probably to make you look through more profiles so they could serve more ads and selling more premium memberships which unlocks the ability to see who has Liked you.
Fuck though, their solution to competing with Tinder has been to strip everything away until it's exactly like Tinder, at which point why wouldn't you just use Tinder? Next up the Tumblr cult that's taken over that place will probably go the Bumble route and only let women make the first movie, something that if it happened in the real world would doom the human species to die out within 2 generations.
I get that girls receive an avalanche of messages and 95% of them are garbage they have to sift through. How is this more of a burden than guys having to sift through hundreds of search results, filtering out all the fatties and travelholic Machu Picchu chicks, and coming up with unique well thought out messages for each one they're interested in only to get replies on just 1/5th of them, of which only 1/4th will result in a date, of which 1/2 will actually show? Everyone gets a majority of garbage and has to put in work to filter out the losers. The only difference is guys do it during a proactive search and women do it reactively with the mountain of offers presented to them, just like all heterosexual courtship since the dawn of man. All this bullshit does is restrict choice for all parties. |
