Current state of dating apps:
Okcupid- Taken over by Tumblr culture trying to slowly turn it into a Tinder clone. Endless profiles of dour faced hipster glasses saying that they're "in an open relationship with a wonderful partner".
Plenty of Fish- Hookup site for meth heads.
Tinder- I've done my share of hooking up through these things, but I'm baffled that anyone has ever gotten laid through this app. Finding mutual matches is rare enough, but even sending out a message to a mutual match who has liked you back has only a fraction of the reply rate that messaging strangers on Okcupid does (back when you could actually message people on Okcupid before the latest awful change). The ones that do message back have an attitude right out of the gate and it never goes anywhere.
Bumble- Tinder with the twist that even if you mutual match with someone, only the woman gets to make the first move and send you a message first. This works about as well as you would expect. Even if a message does get sent, it's all on a bullshit arbitrary timer designed to squeeze money out of you. You have 24 hours to message a mutual match and 24 hours to reply. Miss that window and you can only message or reply to someone by spending tokens you buy with real money. The site is a double scam in that they only show the (usually inactive) profiles of their most attractive members. It's just an endless parade of hotties who could be amateur models. I refuse to believe it's a natural sample of the people who sign up for dating apps. So they only show the (inactive) profiles of people hot enough to not need the extra help. It's either a scam or you have to be a model to get anything out of it.
Match.com- The worst designed dating site ever. It's $30 a month for this shit yet it's nowhere near as well designed as free shit like Okcupid. It's almost Web 1.0 it's so bad. It is also a scam. It has free and paid profiles, but free profiles can only "wink" at other users, not send messages. Worse, free profiles can't even read messages sent to them. Even worse, it does not tell you which are paid and which are free profiles. You have no clue if the people you're messaging will even receive it or if you're wasting time with a free profile which is useless. They keep all profiles up long after they've cancelled and gone inactive just to inflate their user base. The only thing you get out of a free profile is it will notify you that you got a message, and can read it by signing up for at least $30! I signed up a year ago when they had a 3 months for the price of 1 deal. I got maybe one message every 2-3 weeks. Immediately after my paid membership expired, it started notifying me constantly about all these new messages I was getting. 3 a week! Uh huh, sure I am. What an amazing coincidence this happens right when it's time to make the decision to resubscribe. |
