I had a copy of Punch-Out as a kid, but no manual. I got as far as Bald Bull. by Dream Cast 12/31/2017, 7:06pm PST I could knock him down over and over without ever letting him lay a glove on me, but I could never knock him out. I didn't know you could do an uppercut by pressing start. And yeah, I realize there's only four buttons on the pad, but you need to already have a star in the bank before pressing start will do ANYTHING, and who the hell would hide a secret superpunch on the nonfunctional pause button? I'm comfortable calling Punch-Out a perfect game provided it comes with a manual, which is the sort of stipulation that will determine whether or not we see any PC games on this list. Stew already defined a perfect game as one that's broken by adding or subtracting features. I think an alternate definition might be a game that you can re-release over and over again in slightly different configurations and it's always pretty great because the core is so unstoppably robust. I would put Tetris, Lumines, and maybe even Doom or Street Fighter II in this category of "pizza games." I'm hesitant to call Resident Evil HD perfect just because that game gets better every time they remaster it. They would have to release a version that was a step back for me to be fully confident. Finally, while I definitely didn't feel this way as a kid, the older I get the more convinced I am that no one will ever make a less imperfect game than Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. It's like if Braid had an actual game, a complete mainline Super Mario game, to go along with all the collection puzzles. And instead of being about who knows faggot shit, literally pages out of Jonathan Blow's journal, it was about monkeys. Also! it had a female co-protagonist, whereas Jonathan Blow just said lady ghostbusters were scientifically unlikely. I suppose DKC2 is perfect largely in the sense that it isn't Braid.
