This will be a really good game in three months. by Worm 02/23/2018, 10:50am PST
When this game got its initial crowdfunding push during gamergate it was billed as a realistic/hardcore RPG, and that's probably the most common way you'll see any complaints about it being dismissed if you make the mistake of talking to people about it. Is it clunky when you have to fight multiple enemies? Well that's by design you wouldn't want to fight multiple people in real life. Is lockpicking finicky and random feeling? Well picking locks was pretty hard in medieval times. You don't like the save system? Well it just makes it more hardcore!

The problem with all of this is that the game is riddled with bugs and wildly inconsistent. Here's a short list:

  • Some alchemy tables send your character flying into the atmosphere others move him up in the air by a foot.

  • If you get dismounted in combat your character starts floating in air, you can only fix this by finding a high enough hill where your feet touch the ground, calling your horse and getting back on it and off it.

  • Locks are grouped by difficulty but at a given skill level some very hard locks are marked as 'impossible' by the game while others are not. The "Too Difficult" message is easy to miss so you might attempt the wrong 'very hard' lock and only realize it's impossible after breaking some picks.

  • Some quests produce save checkpoints and others don't, which is doubly frustrating with the limited saves mechanic (that you can thankfully mod out on PC)

  • The game teachings you important combat stuff then expects you to talk to the trainer again to learn the rest of the important combat stuff.

  • Scripting on a lot of quests is really bad and includes a lot of people running into walls and then warping way ahead of you to where they meant to be going and which point you'll fail that objective for not following closely enough. This isn't terrible but sometimes can be weird, like when I fast traveled past a cutscene trigger and got dumped back into the quest.

  • Quests start off being really great but then as the game runs on they get worse. Culminating in a whodunit where the game literally refuses to let you accuse the culprit (and marks all your gear as stolen when you go to get it back) and a stealth mission which is scripted to fail making the best choice to just fail it right from the beginning.

  • Stealth executions and takedowns are completely inconsistent sometimes they alert people and sometimes they don't, which makes any stealth play basically pointless.

Now the big patch (not the day one patch which we already got and apparently didn't fix any of this) is coming out next week. The major improvements among this are going to be making lock picking better on controller and letting you save on exit and hopefully tons of bug fixes. Though it's probably not going to be all the bugs because the simple fact that some of these slipped through just demonstrates a fundamental lack of QA. So you're probably going to be at least waiting 3 months for bugs to get patches or for there to be player patches to fix them.

As far as problems that have nothing to do with bugs, it seems like the dev agrees with the 'hardcore' contingent so any console player is basically fucked and doomed to keep losing progress to crashes since they won't just remove their pointless limited save system. Also since they seem to feed off the braindead admiration of people who unironically think a eurogamer review that wants to logic black people into 15th century bohemia are as bad as actual racists, I'm gonna guess we'll be waiting to get the third act of the game.

Though that really doesn't matter since combat isn't even one tenth of what makes the game fun.

In the end what is really fun about this game is the front loaded quests and events that have lots of care and thought put into them. The story really is enjoyable and while there are a few groan worthy parts (like Lady Stephanie making you wear her dad's old shirt and then fucking you) it's just altogether very fun and enjoyable until you sort of run out of the good quests. Though proper patching and whenever we get the rest of the story quest (unless it's just more linear shit) are going to really make this game great.
