"Mad World" was originally performed by Tears For Fears, and in case you haven't heard it, here:
Two years later, Gary Jules does a cover in which he recognizes the flaws in the original. (1) It's too fast; songs about sad subjects are usually done slower. (2) The song is too upbeat for someone singing about how bad things are. By stripping the music down to just the essentials, the low, slow "dirge"-type refrain, you get a much "sadder"song and it works better. Listen and compare
