Overload

Not actually on sale, but thanks to gog's delay in releasing it I was able to get the two bonus games for free. Maybe some day I can take the time to confirm that Sunless Sea is as shitty as I predicted.

Overload is great, it's Descent 4, and just when I thought it couldn't love it any more, I discovered buried in the options menu an optional "smash attack" button for close range melee attacks that temporarily stun robots at no damage to you, and it has its damage level significantly increased when you have the invulnerability powerup. RIP AND TEAR!

Victor Vran: Motorhead and Fractured Worlds expansions

Even on sale these DLC were ridiculously overpriced, but I've given Victor Vran a second look recently and I truly think it's the best melding of action game and ARPG ever made. To put it in perspective, Shadow Warrior 2 is a fun action game that isn't ruined by the included ARPG elements, but the loot chasing and character build system in SW2 is not at all compelling by itself. Victor Vran capitalizes on the best part of ARPGs by leaving out boring permanent stat and skill points and instead makes equipment AND skills AND spells function as random loot that can be enchanted and buffed up with the transmutation system. I also like that I can just pop into the character screen and change my entire build (class included) on a whim. Scrubz 4 life! The action side of the game is more like Bastion 2 than Transistor ever was. All the weapon types in Victor Vran have a specific technique to their use to maximize DPS and that makes rolling and slaughtering your way through the killing fields much more engaging than a regular ARPG.

The Motorhead DLC is the better of the two, adding an entire aftergame campaign that's kinda the poor man's Brutal Legend in terms of setting, but includes several great new spells and weapons, especially a skill that makes the caster build (Cavalier Outfit) MUCH more viable. A nice thing about this DLC is while the new skill cards are incorporated into the base game, the electric guitar weapons and headbanging spells are left out so as not to break the base game's gothic horro aesthetic (unless you switch to the Motorhead content and bring those weapons and spells back with you. Fractured Worlds DLC boosts the level cap to 60, and adds four new random maps ala. the base game's Cauldron of Chaos but with new tile sets, as well as new Talisman items that charge up a super power over time. Only buy these DLC if you already love Victor Vran, and even then only buy them on sale.

Ruiner

I'm afraid in advance that the review I'm going to write for this game is going to sound too negative. It's a good game with a fantastically executed aesthetic, but instead of merely good, it could have been great save for a few design flaws that I don't feel like describing unless someone asks.

It's a mouse-WASD isometric shooter/brawler with a Zone of the Enders-style rapid dash system in a cyberpunk/horror setting that's equal parts Ghost in the Shell anime and Dario Argento's Suspiria. You're a nameless protagonist whose brain has been hacked and his head encased in a combination gimp mask and LED monitor who's being helped by a benevolent hacker to rescue his brother from the shadowy forces who kidnapped him, and if you think the plot is going to be that straightforward, you haven't read a lot of cyberpunk. Not since Everspace have I seen a game that's showed off what the Unreal engine's really capable of in the hands of a talented art team. It's fast, it's fun, it's gruesomely violent, but just a couple little changes could have made it great. Definitely worth $10 during this sale.
