I just got back from driving through WV as a tourist by Fullofkittens 06/24/2018, 2:00pm PDT It is mountainous AS FUCK. If you are - like I am - accustomed to the midwest you literally cannot believe your eyes as you drive around this place. Due to that presumably difficult-to-develop topography it's also mostly unclaimed wilderness. We stopped in Morgantown WV for the night and I thought it was a charming little college town, it reminded me of Grand Rapids MI or Madison WI, except those college towns are not 10 minutes away from lookout points at the top of a mountain range. It is astonishingly beautiful country: Two pieces of WV trivia I learned while driving through Virginia and WV: The state food of West Virginia is the pepperoni roll. In Michigan we have an analogous thing called a pasty: when miners went down in the mines they needed some kind of meat-filled pastry that they could keep in their pocket until lunchtime. In MI the miners were from the north Atlantic and their wives filled their pastries ("pasties") with beef, turnips, potatoes, and carrots. They are pretty yummy but very overrated. In WV, the Italian wives filled their husbands' pastries with like a quarter-pound stack of pepperoni and called them pepperoni rolls. They are also pretty yummy and overrated. Michigan's real official food is the coney dog. The places mentioned in John Denver's 1971 hit "Take Me Home, Country Roads" are all in western Virginia, not in West Virginia. This has not stopped the students of West Virginia University from making "Take Me Home, Country Roads" their fight song. :(
