Larry A. Long, an inspector for Prince George's County, came and knocked on my door a few minutes ago. The Town of University Park is complaining to the county because I have a dish on the lawn about 4 feet from my house near the driveway, directly in front of my house. This violates a county ordinance, probably some zoning rule. (He mentioned the code section but I forgot it.) The dish must either be mouted to the building or on the side of the property, not in front. With a reference from Mr. Long to section 27, I found it.I found it at Section 27-424.02, which reads in part:
County Zoning Code Sec. 27-424.02 wrote:
Satellite dish antennas.
(b) The location of a satellite dish antenna shall be dependent on the reception of usable satellite signals. Where usable signals can be obtained, the antenna shall be ground-mounted and located in the rear yard. If usable signals cannot be obtained from such rear yard location, the antenna shall be ground-mounted and located in either side yard. If usable signals cannot be obtained from such side yard location, the antenna may be mounted on a pole or any other structure. In no event shall a satellite dish antenna be located in the front yard.
Basically the dish has to be moved about 6 feet to the left from where it is now. Okay, first I call the landlord to keep him in the loop. Next, I call Dish network. After authenticating I speak to a nice lady from Dish Network who probably works in Bangalore. After I explain the circumstances, she informs me there would be a $50 fee for a technician to come out. I am a bit concerned. "Now let me get this straight, you're going to charge me $50 to fix the problem you caused by installing the dish in an illegal spot?" "Yes." But she is able to waive the charge and the installer will come out Tuesday morning.
I called Mr. Long and told him, and suggested he have his supervisor send a letter to both satellite companies letting them know about the restriction. He said he would and so maybe this will be the end of the matter, and it might prevent this from happening in other spots in the future.
