Having played Gladius, I'm a LOT less forgiving of this game's flaws! by Mischief Maker 07/14/2018, 7:12am PDT
The models are gorgeous, I always prefer a straight tactics game to a strategy one, and the rules were patched to a state that rewards crazy meatgrinder assaults. But everything else about the game does its damndest to ruin my enjoyment.

The maps have the double fail of being ugly, but also obtuse. Is this a tree I can shoot over, or does it block LOS completely? Lets bring up a mess of symbols and colored squares to find out.

Every action requires a few more keyboard strokes and mouseclicks than necessary.

The choice to color the maps grey and light them with grey overcast light and have the game feature the grey space wolves means even the visual pop of the wonderful models is diluted.

So much love put into the models, yet the visual and sound effects for weapons fire and explosions are shockingly amateurish.

But worst of all is the music. It's possibly the worst videogame music I've ever heard. People in the steam forums were reporting sound bugs, not realizing that's just the music. And worst of all, only one song is ever played during the actual gameplay and it's the worst song in the game.

It's a pity that Gladius is so much more enjoyable to play due to lacking these various fuckups, because under the hood Sanctus Reach has the superior combat mechanics, especially its handling of flamers.
