Show your ignorance rather than explain why someone else is wrong by Commander Tansin A. Darcos 07/17/2018, 2:04am PDT
Those of you who wanted to criticize me wasted a "teachable moment," where instead of going for the cheap shot and insulting me, you could have cured me of some ignorance and allowed all of us to learn something. Someone mentioned diatomaceous earth as an alternative. When I asked why I'd want to use "dirt" over something clean like boric acid, you went full retard and used the insult card on the low road instead of choosing to raise the conversation. Doing some research I found out a few things.

1. While boric acid is a white crystalline powder, diatomaceous earth is a gray crystalline powder.
2. While boric acid has a low toxicity (the LD50 requires eating about two cups) food grade diatomaceous earth is non-toxic to mammals typically residing in a home including people and pets. Toxicity of diatomaceous earth is very close to boric acid but accidental consumption of food grade diatomaceous earth is much less serious.
3. Boric acid "wears out" over time, if wet, is used up by insects crawling across it and has to be reapplied. Diatomaceous earth stays in place better, is not affected by moisture.
4. Diatomaceous earth is applied in teaspoon quantities; boric acid is often poured out and spread on floors and other places.
5. If you're going to throw power like boric acid on floors and cracks insects might go threough then what is the difference in using diatomaceous earth the same way?
6. Diatomaceous earth is less expensive than boric acid.
7. Boric acid has to be applied correctly; if it's put on in piles or too thick, insects will do what people do on confronting a large snowbank: go around.
