| Battletech
A total success at what it aimed to do: a port of the tabletop game to PC with the computer taking care of all the character sheet busywork, that falls into the same pitfall as the Starfleet Battles-based Starfleet Command games. When you take the busywork out of these character sheet-centric strategy games, there's not much meat left for the gameplay. Love the worldbuilding in this game. Into the Breach I was right, this game is better than Battletech. The underlying systems are way simpler, but the actual strategic decisions up to the player are much wider. In fact I like it better than FTL. My one complaint is the final battle is kind of a letdown with only two sections and no giant mega space bug to defeat. Maybe they'll release an advanced edition. Overload It's Descent 4, meaning not only did they recapture the feeling of the original descent, they improved on the systems in many significant ways that makes this the best of the series. Ramming attacks are SOOO satisfying! And the survival mode is maybe even more fun for me than the main game, even if it does suffer from a little unlockable cancer. God, I'm going to be so depressed if Descent Underground outsells this game. Warhammer Gladius This completely blew away my expectations. I know I said it was like a turn-based Dawn of War 1, but with the four factions having such distinct playstyles perhaps Starcraft is the better comparison. My favorite 40K game of all time. No Man's Sky Shit when it came out, shit still, and it will never not become shit because Sean Murray insists on adding new features nobody wanted while completely neglecting the ones originally advertised that attracted people to the game in the first place. It's essentially an HD version of Starbound without the boss fights to make all your grinding and house-decorating finally pay off. However, GOG ended up giving me a full refund for this game which opened the door to me risking a purchase of... Ys VIII Buyer beware, there are still lots of people complaining about the stability of this port, but it's perfectly smooth and playable for me and they just released a new version that promises to fix the one major bug I encountered. Beyond the port job this is probably the most fun I've had in any Zelda clone. I especially like how the earlygame puts all the emphasis on merely surviving on this desert island before finally getting on with the inevitable uncovering of a lost civilization and cutting up some ancient evil. The music is the best I've heard in a Ys game since Oath. I do think the combat system of this game is a step down from Ys Oath in Felghana/Origin, but those two games are in my top 10 all time action games so it's not as damning an indictment as that may sound. Great game, and it seems to be running fine on my Intel/Nvidia machine with nothing overclocked. |
