This didn't make a huge impression on me when I first started out, but I decided to give it another try and it finally clicked for me.

Making the motherships out of modular cubes leads to ships that at best could be described as the ship from "The Black Hole" if the mirror-faced zombies were hosting a nonstop rave. But the fact that every system is represented as a cube that can be shot (or rammed) off makes for combat that's way more visceral than Rebel Galaxy or Starpoint Gemini Warlords. I especially like that while your weapon energy is recharging, you can still be on the offensive by using your tractor beam to slam tiny asteroids into your enemy's hull.

Why do the fun games always have to look like shit? (Protip: turn the depth of field slider to ZERO)
