| A while ago - which means at least 2 or more years ago - I noticed a problem that I am sure the Official Cretinous Reprobatestm are going to use to accuse me of possessing yet another mental disease or condition (usually beginning with the letter "a").
Sometimes I will decide I want or need to go do something in another room, or I need to retrieve a tool from somewhere else to continue working on or to finish something I'm doing. And a few seconds after I start the retrieval task I completely forget what I was going after or going to do. And I plain can't remember what it was. And no matter how much I try to think of it I still can't remember. So I discovered a solution on what to do if I can't remember what the intervening task was: drop it. Just abandon the task right then and there, and go back to what you were doing before. Just resume it like the intervening task had never happened,. One of three things will happen: (1). You'll never remember and whatever it was did not need to be done. (I don't think this has ever happened.) (2). Something else intervenes and you end up not doing what you were going to do. (Rare, but occasionally happens.) (3). A short time after you abandon the task, the memory of what it was comes up and slams you, hard. Like someone walking up, tapping you on the shoulder, then pasting you one in the face (metaphorically.) I have found that when (3) happens it's always a "slams you hard" event because the memory gets burned into your brain and now you won't forget it until youi actually go complete the task. And that when it does come back you immediately recognize the thought as the idea that got away from you before. I have found abandoning unrememberable ideas allows them to resurface much faster than trying to force them back. |
