I hail the original as the best single-capital-ship space combat game ever made. There's a real tactile feel to the controls with the various weapons systems assigned to single button presses, so you can, for example, turn on a flak barrage to shoot down an incoming missile swarm without having to dig through a menu. There are also clearly different "builds" of ship you can put together for close, medium, long range combat, or freighter work. And if you're a weirdo like me who didn't fall in love with the music, the game natively supports alternative music tracks. There's a real Star Trek 2 meets Pirate movie thrill of punching a hole through an enemy's shields with expert turret control, then activating your ramming deflectors and T-boneing them to death.
In comparison, Space Pirates and Zombies 2's complexity is entirely tied up in the ship design while combat is super simple with no shield facing and a single shoot button that covers all weapon systems, and Starpoint Gemini Warlords is an overcomplicated mess with a zillion different camera control buttons to manage (too fast) 3D combat, yet your ships essentially have only two weapon systems.
My only two complaints with Rebel Galaxy 1 is the AI settings for individual turrets would be better as a priority system instead of "capital ships or don't shoot," and the fact that it's incredibly unsuccessful at creating the "feeling" of actually being in space.
So the sequel has abandoned the capital ship combat that made the series unique and they're just doing yet another Privateer clone? Oh well, at least the weapon effects are guaranteed to be bright and colorful. |
