Well the crappy reboot of Star Control came out from crappy developer Stardock while they attempt to sue the original designers of Star Control 2 into oblivion. I certainly wasn't going to play that game so I reloaded this instead:

This is the third sequel in digital eel's infinite space trilogy, starting with "Strange Adventures in Infinite Space," followed by "Weird Worlds," and now "Sea of Stars." SAiIS was one of if not THE game that got me into indie gaming years ago.

Think of Sword of the Stars compressed down into a 20-minute coffeebreak game.

Sea of Stars is just a complete improvement in every way. The emphasis has shifted, though, it's no longer about getting home in time with as much booty as you can carry, it's now about fully exploring the star system and defeating the grand menace. All the new features are great, like being able to upgrade capital ships at the species' homeworld (why yes I WOULD like the Garthan light carrier with its infinite supply of fighers), or deploying anywhere on the battlefield you want, when you want (oh, you like surprise encirclements, do you, mr. Urluquai?). Even the 3D map, which other people hated, I think is a huge improvement because you can maneuver around nebula patches instead of just being blocked off in the 2D map of the previous games. The main downside of this game is their artist died so the new pictures are pretty crappy, but the music is so much better I think it's a wash aesthetically.

Do you work for a living? Are you a gamer dad? Want an epic Star Trek odyssey that concludes in less than 30 minutes? Give this game a try!
