It's a good article! I read all the way to the end because I was bored. by Injustice 09/29/2018, 4:34pm PDT I'm conflicted about trans stuff. In my head, I like to think I understand that other people are at least as smart as I am. They don't need me to do their thinking for them any more than they need me to make their decisions for them. If I don't have any pressing grievances about the social construct of gender as it applies to me, I should probably just keep my mouth shut and listen. I definitely shouldn't start agitating on behalf of some nebulous "others," most of whom I've never met, and all of whom are quite possibly just my own ego in disguise. At the same time, deep down in my heart of hearts, I'm an old-fashioned gender-critical feminist. I have the same knee-jerk response to gender that I do to religion: at some point someone made it up, and no matter how innocent their intentions, the reason it's still around is because it serves the interests of the patriarchy. I'm instinctively opposed to men cutting off their own dicks because it's one less thing I can threaten them with if they don't stop oppressing me. My inner Dworkin is hungry for validation, and oh man did she eat out on this lessay. I guess my chief takeaway from it all, aside from the warm feeling of confirmation bias my mom is trying to share when she sends me articles about foreigners she saw on Facebook, is that the human experience is pretty fundamentally fucked up. There's a big part in there where the author rails about a future where adults buy status symbol sex changes like SUVs, kids pester their parents for puberty-blockers like rap CDs, and homosexual loneliness reaches all-time highs as star players get poached from junior high lesbian farm teams to the big leagues of becoming actual men. Which sounds like the ravings of a nutcase, but also maybe inevitable given the way our culture works, and probably won't seem so weird by the time we get there. Is it possible the only reasonable response might be laughter? That would be easy. Let's share a laugh at the comments section, where an out-and-proud transwoman says she deserves lower insurance premiums, because women are safer drivers than men. I can't begin to wrap my mind around all the different ways that doesn't make any fucking sense.
