I do find the time limit thing annoying, but... I can see why they do it. They're trying to get a more genuine reaction out of you rather than "how can I min-max this to get the best ending."
The problem is, in the end it's jut a dialog tree. Not that much different than the phone tree you get when you call Verizon to complain about your phone service. Real role-playing requires some other smelly nerds to actually talk to, not a computer.
In the end, a game like LA Noire is just some scenery, and searching the dialog trees. At least back in the Ultima days you had to play "guess the word." There was a sense of achievement when you could get an NPC to respond to something besides NAME and JOB.
I never played Tyranny, but it does sound odd if you are picking choices about stuff you barely even know about. I guess this is another attempt to add some difficulty to the process. What do you think about the Sword of a Thousand Truths??? Quick, read this infodump and pick an option within 30 seconds.
I think if a game tried to do that to me, though, I'd use this little thing called the internet to choose "correctly" rather than trying to do it in real time. Either that, or I'd just choose randomly and see how much of a dumpster fire ending I could get. |
