I knew it was bad, but I thought that it might have some fun action scenes. Kind of like how the Matrix sequels can be interesting if you ignore the plot and watch them as Kung-fu movies.
I was disappointed. It's a very joyless Abrams-style fan servicey reboot. I could almost visualize the boxes being checked. Kessel Run, check. Chewbacca origin story, check. Lando, check. This movie has the same problem as a lot of other modern movies. Really long action scenes that feel like a video game. Very little character development. Why am I supposed to care about these characters again?
The thing about the original trilogy is that Han was the everyman character. Everyone else was a space wizard, a princess, or whatever. Han was the down-to-earth guy who laughed at hokey space religions, preferred a gun to a sword, and always shot first. Now they Mary Sued the hell out of him. He's practically Batman.
On the plus side, since this was such a huge flop, Disney will probably stop shitting out Star Wars movies for a while. |
