It's like XCOM not X-com, only with barnyard animals.
Only you can move around and explore the map outside combat, pick up loot and do things like hide.
If you hide, you switch control to another character, until everyone's hiding. You can ambush patrols this way.
Here I picked up a third soldier. She's safe here, hidden as these patrols wander around. We could engage combat, but the enemies are too close together to get off stealth kills. I waited for the enemies to wander off and tried a different direction.
You get a point a level, and use these to fill up skill trees.
There's a town you go back to for buying loot with scrap and upgrading equipment. I'm not sure how much the map will open up, but it's pretty linear so far. The combat plays like XCOM, but not sure this game will be as replayable. SO it has this RPG story instead... but it might be bad. So far it's some foozle some guy found somewhere gotta find the guy something like that, and it seems like this should have jokes but the best one so far has been "I don't give a duck." I think they used that one a couple times so far actually. EHhhh who cares XCOM2 with a duck and a pig, I'm still in. My pig has Run N Gun and just learned a charge that smashes cover. The duck is the sniper, and just learned to fly.
If this were AAA it would have in-game cutscenes, so instead they used concept art. I like this artist they got though.
