I like them! Not as much as Doom, but still. by Dream Cast 12/17/2018, 2:56pm PST
I'm fascinated by FPS levels from the time when scripting was primitive to nonexistant. Designers were trying to create cutting edge, immersive, realistic or even cinematic experiences, and the only way they could do it was by shaping the physical space the player inhabits. Levels became so magnificently intricate, so full of creativity and absurdity, that it's hard not to feel like you're peering inside the designer's skull every time you load one up.

That's the other thing old FPS levels have going for them: you can load them up and start playing immediately, without even a tram ride to sit through, and spend your entire session engaged with gameplay instead of narrative spectacle or elaborate incremental reward systems. It's unfortunate, then, that the gameplay is so often the weakest link! And I mean even the gunplay, not just the parts where you're walking around in circles grunting at walls, trying in vain to reveal some hidden alcove with the gold keycard in it. I don't want to go too far down that road, though. I'm not nearly as confident that Duke Nukem 3D isn't actually all that much fun as I am that Doom is close to perfect.

I'm also a sucker for the '90s computer game aesthetic, essentially the form and content of '80s genre movies regurgitated by the geeks who loved them (guilty as charged). Remember when Jim Lee got on X-Men, and suddenly all the Kirby tech became gear lifted straight from freeze frames of Appleseed? I didn't even mind, I could look at that shit all day.

Shamelessly enthusiastic copyright infringement plus gratuitous french cut bikinis. It's the recipe for Duke Nukem!

Which is your favourite '90s FPS, and why is it Doom?
