The Quiet American (2002) by Vietnamese Pirate Movie Review 01/09/2019, 5:07pm PST
You could say the US barged into post-colonial Vietnam, without making any attempt to understand its people or their situation, and expected Europe's whore to leap at the chance to become America's housewife. This colourful metaphor plays out literally in The Quiet American, a 2002 film adaptation of Graham Greene's 1955 novel, in which Brendan Frasier and Michael Caine vie for the affections of a young girl in French Indochina. This wasn't too long after Frasier did Gods and Monsters with Sir Ian, and man, the guy had some incredible comedic timing for a floppy-haired slab of beef. Michael Caine is obviously Michael Caine, and on top of that he really seems to be trying here. I don't usually go in for romantic movies because I could care less about women and their feelings, but like Gods and Monsters this one gets a pass, since it's all about the bros and their relationship with one another - no homo. The Vietnamese girl is basically an object, like the golden idol in the live-action Scrooge McDuck movie that I'm sure Brendan Frasier signed on to at some point. (I'm not being racist, I swear. There must be at least one Vietnamese girl in all the hundreds of serious films about Vietnam who's a fully developed character with a rich inner life, it's not like they're actually little yellow robots... right?)
