I'm only about 3 missions into the campaign/tutorial, but the game is on deep discount at gog until tomorrow afternoon and I wanted to say that this game, while different in many ways, is better than War for the Overworld and better than Dungeon Keeper. It's more what I expected Dungeon Keeper to actually be years ago when I saw a teaser ad included in the disk for some other Bullfrog game.

In this game you build your dungeon square-by-square like DK, but you also can send your minions through the entrance to the surface where you control them like a basic RTS on surgical strikes to take out specific holy sites on the map to produce the "evil" resource which is necessary to climb the tech tree. Meanwhile the good guys send regular and increasingly strong waves at your dungeon at a steady pace, though you can intercept them in the overworld if you want. All your minions have jobs in the underworld, eg. Orks build traps and their repair parts, demons generate mana, etc. This gives the game a back and forth rhythm of heading out to capture a site while the traps back home take care of hero waves, then your dudes all return to the dungeon to rest, repair, and reload for the next foray while you build the new room types they helped to unlock.

Aesthetically the game is going for a storybook look ala. King's Bounty that's absolutely awash in color. Minion animations are much livelier than their WftO alternatives. The voice is a 3rd person narrator with a sing-songy storytime inflection who doesn't even try to be the original DK voice. The traps are much more theme-appropriate IMO (no auto-targeting cannons). I just wish it went more for the dark humor of the original DK instead of the Shrek-as-translated-from-Bulgarian humor they went for.

Consensus among the reviews seems to be that the first two Dungeons games were crap, but part 3 is where they finally got it right.

Clash of Gods is the only DLC that has an actual gameplay impact, the rest of them are all 3-mission packs with some cosmetic additions.

It has a randomly generated map skirmish mode and the gameplay's solid.
