I worked at an Electronics Boutique in 1996 and 1997.
One of the benefits at the time was that you could check games out and play them. You had to write a review though. We had notebooks filled with clerks reviewing games. I remember I gave the football game I like (Sierra's Football Pro, the 96 version) a "78%" score. I think it's one of the top ten games ever made, I just couldn't determine that in an evening.
We sometimes got free games from publishers. I forget what I had to do to get a copy of Ripper. Sometimes the store would get a copy and our manager would dole the discs out. Sometimes the publishers gave coupons to the store and you could photocopy them and fill them out and get your own copy. That is what I think happened with Ripper. Though the document says that I played a demo or something.
I still have all six discs. I did throw out the ridiculously enormous Ripper poster that had Walken on it the other day, unfortunately. It's just too massive. Anyway, here's a picture I took of some mail I got from Take Two about it:
You're ok as far as I am concerned, Take Two Interactive.
