And besides, I thought before diving into Rage 2, how many times could they use this cleft imagery in one game?

A lot, it turns out! The cleft is used with such frequency that it feels like a visual cue: The exaggerated cleft signifies the most mutated of mutants, subhuman beasts that are caged, ridden like horses, or mounted like animals.

Early in the game, I meet a scientist riding a humanoid beast. The creature also has a cleft lip, this one less exaggerated, more like my own at birth. The creature is covered in its own drool, a straw hanging from its mouth. There’s a certain Total Recall Kuato schtick going on here between the scientist and the creature, but one thing is clear: the beast is meant to be a freak. The intention is for every player to be repulsed.

Here are the two responses I never want to see to an article like this: 1) he's wrong to be offended and 2) I never realized this could be offensive. It doesn't take a genetically normal genius to figure how a game about killing and riding around on deformed monsters might be a little bit hurtful to real-life deformed monsters. And even if you couldn't put the pieces together on your own, like whichever saintly doctor fused Chris's lip for him, he just wrote a whole article explaining it to you. Anyone admitting at this point they still don't get it should be ashamed of the birth defect that made them retarded.

But being cruel to freaks doesn't mean the rest of us can't enjoy Rage 2 (you know, provided it's better than Rage 1, the Chris's lip of lips of id's shooters). The purpose of entertainment is to please people, and you can't please all of the people all of the time. You have to balance the pain a game like Rage 2 causes to those with cleft palettes against the joy it brings to the rest of us, who think they're gross, and want to shoot them in the head with exploding shotgun shells (guilty as charged). It's like the controversy over that first Resident Evil 5 trailer, the one that showed a pretty white guy standing his ground against savage hordes of inhuman blacks. Think of how satisfying an experience like that would be for someone who has to deal with blacks on a daily basis, like an inner city school teacher. They do more for the blacks than anyone, they deserve to let off some steam - and if they can do it in a way that literally doesn't hurt anybody else if they just don't look at it, then what's the harm? Fuck, now all I can think about is shooting black people (or as I call them, derogatory words for black people). I'm gonna go watch Zulu and try to calm down.

Someone post this on Resetera for me.
