| 4. X-wing Alliance
This game has held up very well. The music and sound are great. The voice acting is comically bad (rather then irritatingly bad). The main story is cool except for the complete non-ending and dropped sub-plots. The campaign lasts forever compared to today’s games. 3. X-com: Terror from the Deep Downloaded it of Underdogs recently on a whim (ironically I already own this game from way back when it came out, but it won’t run without the special executable file from Udogs.) The graphics are terrible, but the game is still fun. The tactical battles and destructible battlefields now seem ahead of their time. Slows down once you finish all your research, but it had been so long since I’d played that all the alien autopsies were just like seeing them again for the first time. There’s still a few creatures that only appear on the terror missions I’ve yet to capture. Crashes constantly under XP, some of the music and sound is missing, and tragically I am unable to start the final mission without being booted to the desktop every single time. 2. Covert Action Also got it from Underdogs. First time I’ve been able to play this game since my 386 DX/2 40 w/ 4MB of RAM (circa 1993, I think). EGA graphics at 320x240 resolution. Surprising life left in this game at the harder difficulties. Tossing realism out the window, the actual gameplay is a lot of fun. 1. Freespace 2 Granddaddy of them all. Yesterday I picked up my last campaign towards the end of disc two when the Knossis device is discovered. I play this one at least once a year. So that’s it. The two most recent games I’ve bought have been Battlefield Vietnam and Silent Storm. I’ve stopped playing Battlefield, and I’ve yet to install Silent Storm because I don’t have 2.1 GB free. Still waiting to find the next game that I'll be wanting to play again 5 - 10 years later. |
