There is an asterisk next to my victory because I used save states to cheat on world 8-4. I felt like the game was becoming way too much about memorization and repetition at that point.
I learned that on the original Famicom game, you have to beat the game seven times before you can play the last 4 levels. That is a crazy level of cruelty. They added a battery backed save system just to track if you did this (but not to help with anything else.)
This was a little too much Mario even for me, so I switched over to the SNES Lost Levels cart, which does not implement this craziness. And wow, is it easier. It saves your progress after every level you beat. I also think Luigi controls better. On the original cart, playing Luigi is like playing every level as an ice level.
The las 4 levels are ok, but nothing special. There are a few clever and fun things, but also a lot of elements copied from the first 8 normal levels. At least it’s better than World 7, which was just devs fucking around.
Verdict: play the SNES version. |
