My wife and I decided to try curling at a local place with another couple that are friends of ours. I knew nothing about curling beforehand, this was meant to be a beginner's league.

THE GOOD: The actual time you're playing the game is fun. There is a whole new experience to be had in terms of pushing those rocks (that's curling jargon for the things you chuck down the ice!) and trying to essentially play shuffleboard with them. If you are playing against a team of similarly experienced people then it really is a ton of fun.

THE BAD: Unfortunately, curling people, people who are "into" this thing are among the most Type A and fussy people I've ever met. This thing was five weeks long and the first time out we had an instructor help us with the basics and mechanics. Everyone does it badly, ha ha ha, it's all good. As the weeks progressed we got into situations where we had ringers (people who have been doing it forever) join teams that didn't have four people and this counts as some of the most annoying experiences in my life. They can't WAIT to correct you on anything you might be doing "wrong." One mechanic in curling involves a person at the far end of the ice viewing the thrown rock and having to decide if the other two people need to "sweep" the ice. We always had four people so we didn't need any of these substitutes. I can't count how many times a ringer on the other team would shout out "sweep!!" before I or others had a chance to process whether or not it needed more speed. Towards the end, I got a little knowledgeable about the strength of the throws from people on my team and I could see if the sweepers were half-jogging or not. (If they were walking quick to keep up with the rock, it doesn't need to be swept.) Mr and Ms Helpful on the other team yelling out instructions that were bad half the time would be like having the opposing manager yell out "swing" to a batter in baseball. You'd think they'd be correct 100% of the time if the rocks needed to be swept or not, but no, the typical thing that happened was that the rock had too much distance. So thanks for yelling out your dumbass take on things, opponent person.

The first ten minutes were always great. Then the other team would discern that maybe they had done this more times than our team, and suddenly they thought they were Olympic coaches. There's also not a whole lot of understanding of the rules from these people so they kind of can't do nerd right.

Caltrops, when has something you've looked into as a hobby or activity been smeared by the people that are already into it?
