"Variety Gaming" was just Crecente and his moronic game journo freelancers, all familiar faces from the vidya journalism cesspool. It lasted a little over a year.

But in its short existence, Variety Gaming left a mark. If it weren't for the Rethuglicans, this intrepid piece of reportage would have sunk the Kavanaugh nomination: The Connection Between the Brett Kavanaugh Hearings and Gamergate

No word on why Variety pulled the plug. Maybe they didn't realize how lowbrow gaming culture still is, and were afraid the rest of Hollywood was laughing at them for running articles about Dragonball Z next to the usual Variety fare about the Tony Awards etc. Or they realized how little value the founder of Kotaku brings to a publication. Defending game journos from the evil trolls is one thing. Having to actually work with and pay that garbage a salary is another.

When I get ready to whine (whoops, whing) on Caltrops I type whatever the drama is into Google. Invariably, Kotaku and Polygon show up in the results. Not because of anything they did, but because that is how Google ranks them on everything. They are popular because of how Google ranks them and that is it. Did Crecente think he brought anything of value to the equation? I am sure he did, but he didn't. The gravy train for him was Google inexplicably using his old site as one of the default links to internet tears.

I've got my eye on you, Intrigue Reporter. You've got moxie.
