I used to love his show, and yes I know all about Joey Diaz and his crazy cocaine-trafficking past, I enjoyed the Barry Crimmons episode (and learning the creepy history of the movie Powder) and so on.
The reason I stopped watching Rogan wasn't that he was having on what would eventually become the IDW, it was because he was having right-wing cranks on EVERY OTHER DAY, with multiple repeat-appearances, and they were repeating the same myths about "campus SJWs" over and over and over again. He'd have on Abby Martin once in a blue moon, then the rest was a cavalcade of Dave Rubin types. It got tedious. I can't for the life of me understand why someone with Rogan's money and celebrity would willingly choose to hang out with Ben Shapiro, I had more than enough of that type back in high school debate.
I blame it on Rogan's hero-worship of Sam Harris. Even back when I has hardcore into the New Atheist movement, I knew Sam Harris was the weak link. Saying religion as a concept is bad is fine, but singling out Islam as being somehow objectively worse (with appeal-to-emotion arguments like, "nobody lies awake at night worrying about Buddhists!") means you're a useful idiot strengthening the forces of Christian Theocracy in the US. And that was before I found out the guy's not even a real scientist, he's the heir to the "Golden Girls" TV show fortune and uses his mom's money and entertainment industry contacts to insert himself into the media again and again while fooling casual viewers into thinking he's some kind of academic with his fake "professorial" cadence.
"Scientist" Sam Harris hasn't done an actual experiment since his 2009 PhD thesis. Have a look at this critique of that thesis for a laugh!
Fortunately Rogan's responded to recent criticism and started having more lefties on the show (even if they are dummies like Jimmy Dore) and I am delighted that his massive audience finally has had unfiltered access to Bernie Sanders for once. |
