The Battle for Wesnoth (freeware) by Mischief Maker 08/12/2019, 4:36pm PDT

I've been trying and retrying this community-developed freeware game for years and it never hooked me, but tonight it finally clicked.

Dunno how much was the improved production values or how much was Battle Brothers increasing my tolerance for RNG bullshit, but it's proving to be really, really fun.

It's a turn-based hex-grid fantasy strategy game with a heavy emphasis on weapon types, terrain advantage, and retaining/leveling up individual units over the course of a (sometimes very long) multi-battle connected campaign. Damn is it satisfying taking a loyal unit from lowly horseman to undead nuking/companion auto-healing paladin.

Give it a try, it's free!
