Din's Legacy - First Impressions by Mischief Maker 09/13/2019, 7:38pm PDT
First of all THANKS ICJ!!!

It's not really a sequel to Din's Curse, the least complex of Soldak's games. Rather, it incorporates EVERY SINGLE TYPE OF GAMEPLAY from all of Soldak's previous games, but each map it's randomly chosen. One map might be the simple Din's Curse experience of rescuing your one tiny village under siege from aggressive monsters whose leader lurks in a dungeon somewhere in the wilderness, the next map your village is just one of several clans fighting for dominance in a 4X contest complete with a full diplomacy system.

Gotta be honest, I never played the Zombasite games because I didn't like the 4X gameplay, things can get very overwhelming very quickly. I much preferred the (comparatively) straightforward experience of Din's Curse where it's just you against a single (sometimes huge) dungeon as the dangers to your hapless villagers grow more and more apocalyptic. I don't seem to be able to just prevent a 4X world from being generated, and if I quit to reroll a new world I'm slapped with an XP debt.

The mutation system is actually pretty cool. There are minor mutations where you can get procs randomly assigned to skills (my basic fireball spell got a 25% chance to proc an additional chain lightning effect after exploding). Major mutations function kinda like switching jobs in Final Fantasy Tactics. You can choose to mutate over to another class, hanging on to all the skills of your original class with skill points assigned and gaining access to a random selection of skills in your new class that you can now lock in.

4X or no, this game plays like something that was in early access for years because the interface is a nightmare for newbies, but very quick and efficient if you're experienced with the systems.

I don't know why, considering most of the assets are carried over, but this game looks uglier to me than Din's Curse and definitely Drox Operative.

I can't help but feel a little misled when they advertised it as a Din game but it plays like Depths of Peril. I'll play more this weekend and write up a more detailed review.
