As far as accepting minimum wage, I had to; Los Angeles was (then) a very competitive area as far as finding work was concerned. With no prior work history, I'm stuck in a classic "Catch-22," the places that will hire someone with no experience pay minimum wage and are usually very hard work, which I'm not cut out for, and the ones who pay more want a work history and references, and sometimes a degree.
In fact, because the job was in La Mirada (about 22 miles from where I lived), just barely inside of LA County, the man at Job Service (the new name the US used then for State Employment Offices) almost didn't want to send me there. But it was the first thing I'd found in weeks other than occasional bouts of temporary work. |
