How do you feel about Souls/Bloodborne, stealth, and parrying? by Rafiki 11/30/2019, 11:18am PST
It's like those games, but non-boss combat is largely about stealth takedowns and bosses are about perfectly timed parrying and counterattacks. Unlike past games, parrying just deflects a single attack instead of immediately opening enemies to a takedown, so combat is more involved than waiting to land a single deflection or circle-strafing to land a backstab. There's no dodge rolling and enemy attacks will usually follow you if you try to sidestep, so you're pretty much obligated to learn combat if you want to get very far.

It has the hallmark of all stealth games, which is standing around and waiting for enemies to patrol in just the right way for you to sneak by or kill them, and standing around and waiting for them to forget you just shanked like 10 people right in from of them. If you choose to just fight everyone that you alerted, then unlike Shadow of Mordor they won't politely take turns attacking you one at a time and instead will properly mob the shit out of you.

You get a prosthetic arm that you can JC Denton augment with secondary weapons of varying utility. I tend not to use them very much, so I don't experiment enough with them to really see what advantages they give you over bosses and enemies. Some advantages are obvious because they're spelled out for you, like using firecrackers to disorient a certain boss or the axe to split shields in half. Things like that.

The grappling is mostly a quick escape from fucking up compared to past games where you'd just have to die and start over.

You can't farm enemies for currency to buy skill-ups, so there's really no chance to out-level the content if it's kicking your ass. The game's sort of non-linear, so you do have options to go to other areas so you don't just hit a dead end.

Overall, I like it. The combat is different enough that if you got good at Souls/Bloodborne it's still pretty hard. You'll probably like it if you liked those other games, or your secret fantasy is to replace a damsel in distress with an 8-year old Japanese boy.
