Succession

Somebody went to HBO and pitched an idea for a series without a single likable character, and not only did HBO greenlight it but it turned out to be good. Main cast, supporting cast, guest stars, I hate everybody! They're all horrible and I want everyone to fail. It's great.

The show's about the CEO/founder of a huge mega-corporation and his family, and the drama around whether he's going to retire and his kids competing to be the one to take over. It cribs from real events here and there, but only in the first season finale does it crib to a degree where it felt a little eye-rolling. The show is played relatively straight like a drama, but is a subtle dark comedy. If any of the characters were likable you might feel bad about them being treated like shit and it would probably make you angry, but since everyone sucks it winds up being funny to see horrible people who deserve it get dumpstered constantly.

Castle Rock

Episode 7 is the exact moment where the show gets really stupid. This is also the highest-rated episode in the series. You'll see the ending of that episode coming a mile away. It feels like something Charlie Kaufman would have made fun of in Adaptation.

There's cheap suspense derived from characters speaking cryptically and withholding information for no justifiable reason. Say what you mean and tell people what you want and why, assholes! When someone is directly asked what their motivation is for doing a thing or asking a favor, having them stare grimly for a solid forty-five seconds while the string section reaches a violent crescendo before silently turning and walking out the door isn't suspenseful, it's hokey bullshit. Everyone has plenty of time to explain themselves but they don't because there's 10 episodes to fill.

The show has characters and plot threads that go nowhere. The old guy banging the black guy's mom is told to go get a junked car from Syracuse because Lurch says he needs it to help the mom. It's never explained how or why it would help, and then when the old guy gets back and says it's going to be delivered the next day Lurch says it will serve as a monument to the Warden and shitty people at the prison? So it was just a pointless ruse? Why? It's never brought up again. Even when the next day rolls around the car isn't delivered.

Black Henry's son is introduced for no reason and serves no purpose. At one point he's sent away for the flimsiest of reasons for 10 hours because it is completely and utterly obvious the writers didn't know what to do with him without him interfering with the plot. So the writer's are like, "UMM, GO SHOPPING." *kid leaves at 9pm barely protesting the rationale, sleeps in a church all night for no reason other than his presence would making writing difficult* Cut him from the story, you dicks.

Then there's random stupid shit. Black Henry asks Molly the realtor if she knows what's in the basement of a house she recently sold. She says she doesn't know because she didn't go into the basement because it was locked and the previous owner couldn't find the key. BitchAreYouForReal.wav What is this, fucking grab-bag realty?
