Assault Android Cactus is THE SHIT!by Mischief Maker 02/17/2020, 5:50pm PST
Man, I'd been passing this game up for years because I had it mixed up with another indie called Pineapple Smash Crew.
But AAC is in fact one of the best, if not THE BEST robotron clone I've played on PC.
So it's an overhead twin-stick shooter with well-implemented WASD-mouseaim controls. Each android has a regular shot pattern that gradually powers up by picking up white orbs dropped by enemies, and a secondary power attack limited by an overheat bar. You can unlock up to eight different androids, and their different weapon loadouts lend themselves to radically different playstyles.
I would put the gameplay on an equal footing with Tesla vs Lovecraft if the RNG spits out a decent starting weapon. You're facing off against a gigantic horde of enemies punctuated by the occasional big bruiser who requires a limited secondary weapon to finish quickly, but at the same time you're constantly pushed to wade through the horde to pick up powerups, one of which is necessary to survive.
Despite the hectic enemy count and transforming levels, AAC is actually a really forgiving game for beginners. You have a Halo-style shield that will absorb up to four hits before you "die," and you can die as many times as you want because actual death in this game comes if your battery timer runs out, and to win any stage you have to chase down battery charge pickups that frequently drop.
