Forum Overview :: What Are You Playing Right Now?

For whatever reason, I never played this back when it was first released. Well, the good news is that the C++ version is now available for free.

(I wouldn't have minded paying $5, but I don't know if a commercial version was ever even released for Linux, so I just downloaded the source code.)

The game is pretty simple. Basically, it's a platformer where you can go left, right, or reverse gravity. But you can't re-reverse gravity until you land again.
There is no jump, and no powerups throughout the game. There is a mini-map, although everything is fixed screens rather than scrolling.

The graphics are super lo-hi. Like, there is no fi. It is very colorful, though. I enjoyed the psychedic colors. It kind of reminded me of the old 8-bit systems, which I'm sure is intentional. I felt like Baba is You did lo-fi better, though. I can't put my finger on why, but it just seemed like... I could tell better what stuff was supposed to be?

The big thing about this game is the speed. Things fly across the screen exceptionally fast, and you have to react quickly as well. This is something I'm usually good at, so I didn't mind. If you don't like things flying across the screen at ludicrous speeds, though, then you will not like this. There really isn't a lot of strategy. You just have to be able to execute some actions with nearly frame-perfect timing. There are frequent save points, however.

There are some optional bonuses you can collect. I got some of them, but not all. The last few would have required me to replay large sections of the game to even get the chance to try to get them, which I just didn't want to do.

This game has a wikipedia page because it is a NOTABLE CULTURAL ARTIFACT HLARGHULARGULARG. I skimmed it and learned that the original VVVVVV was written in Flash. It's a good thing someone ported it to C++ so that we could still enjoy it in 2020.

Oh, also, there is a "Captain Viridian" in the game, which made me think about TDARCOS and his company.

Positive.
