I never left!
Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark
An excellent game. Everything MM said in his review was spot on. I do love that the creators EXPECTED you to try and break it with overpowered dudes, and pre-made a bunch of enemies to be just as broken as you are.
Divinity 2: Definitive Edition
I had bought and played this back in 2017, but never made it past the first island (Act 1). I now know that's because the game has notoriously unforgiving level gates, so that fighting a random bunch of level 7 guys while you're level 6 will totally fuck you if you try and play it like a straight battle instead of the (correct) way of totally cheesing every mechanic possible. I highly recommend playing with at least a map of level-appropriate areas, especially in the beginning where resurrection scrolls are limited.
I got through a large portion of Act 2 by finding a tiny pit of lava and teleporting it all over the map, then teleporting assholes into it. I fought battles normally as well! I lost many of those until I learned to CC down EVERYTHING on EVERY turn. Tactician Mode (Hard Mode?) doesn't really leave much wiggle room, but you get an infinite repec mirror starting Act 2 so it's hard to completely ruin your run. Act 3 is actually balanced very nicely, but then you hit the end game.
Act 4 is an absolute slog, where the difference between a level 17 sword and a level 18 one may be a 20% increase! The entire act is bashing your face against every possible encounter until you finally find one that's level appropriate, then just repeating that until you can get to 20 and have fair fights. Then cheese the final fight with every potion you have left since it is, again, completely impossible to beat without feeling like you've cheated the game.
I urge urge URGE you to play with one of the many combat overhaul mods available on the workshop. Divinity Unleashed seems to be a popular one, but Epic Encounters also looks pretty good. Absolutely do NOT feel like you'll be missing out by not experiencing the combat as originally intended. You won't, unless you play on normal difficulty, in which case you'll probably enjoy yourself more.
X-COM: Chimera
I think they released this early on PC to beta test for when they likely release it on the Switch, because this FEELS like it should be a Switch game. I absolutely steamrolled through the entire game on Veteran (with the exception of the Sacred Coil final mission, which is the only spike in the entire campaign), having only ever had 3 or 4 squad members get scarred and need a timeout. The dialogue is just as bad as everyone says it is, so even if you don't usually care about that sort of thing I can almost guarantee it will grate. The missions can be comically short, and if you pick the right squad members you can end entire rooms in one turn. Hacker girl can move next to an enemy, causing an automatic damaging shock with a solid chance to stun them for a full turn, which will jump to an enemy up to FIVE TILES AWAY for the same chance, and will repeat this until every single enemy in the room is locked down. Hacker girl has only moved at this point, she hasn't used her second action point. Snake girl can snare a single enemy towards her for one action point, then use her second action point to bind him for a tiny amount of damage. Choose hacker girl and spec her for stuns. $10 is definitely a fair price, though.
I'm done with turn based strategy games for the lockdown. There's a Gears of War X-COM now? I'm done.
Bonus!
Hades
The best action roguelike so far. Dispenses with all of the terrible meta stuff that assholes endorse (being able to affect the odds of item rolls based on what you choose like Binding of Isaac; making all builds invalid except for a select few that can deal with the final boss as with FTL) and really makes it feel as though you can win with ANY setup as long as you have a basic understanding of what's happening, which doesn't require a guide at all. Looks beautiful, sounds beautiful, and boss fights can transform into completely new forms after 10-20 hours. It IS in early access, with the next major patch happening in June, but 100% you should buy it now. |
