And speaking of visual clarity and Cuphead, Cuphead is also an offender with its film grain and color distortion. These weren't added to cartoons in ye olden tymes as part of the visual expression of cartoons, they were visual noise! They were unintentional distortions of the real image! Once again, we have the technology to eliminate this shit so why add it back in for *~nostalgia~*?! Why are people nostalgic for shit that sucks? They are definitely guilty of ripping off Fleischer and early Technicolor-alternative processes. Stylistically I'm ok with it since I don't see it all over the place (yet). However, I'm aware it has its critics for various reasons (considered less disciplined, trashy etc).

See: the obsession with replicating physical camera lenses via lens flare and water sticking to the lens. Shit that used to be unwanted consequences of shooting with physical cameras but have no place in digital modeling.
It gives texture and empirical legitimacy to the work. It's like having an old antique dresser with UV damage and fat scars; they call it a "patina". I hate to confirm this.
Digital can often look "too clean", depending on what you're going for, so smoke or grain helps give it texture as they say. It's one of those strange bridges where different generations of editors meet.
