Econ 101 is that supply and demand have to be balanced. by blackwater 05/20/2020, 3:02pm PDT
If I own an apple stand I can't just say "aha! I see that you have a $100 in your pocket. Give it all to me for one apple." People will just shop at some other apple stand.

It's the same way with rents. If you charge too much, you won't get tenants. It's really just that simple.

I know some poster is going to respond with "but I NEED to live in San Francisco." No, you absolutely don't, and a lot of people move out of San Francisco (and California in general) every year. You can get housing for really cheap in some parts of the country. You can even get houses for literally nothing in Detroit, at least last time I checked.

Really housing in California could be cheap too, except the government artificially limits the supply of new houses. But that's a whole 'nother topic.

You can live in a super-cheap place like Pittsburgh and play XBox and smoke a bong all day on your UBI. And this is the thing about UBI and welfare in general. Over time, it inherently creates communities of unproductive people. We call them ghettos, in the parlance of our times. Nobody wants to live in XBox-and-bongsville except the people who have already bought into that vision of life.

For the record I don't support UBI (surprise, surprise) although I do think whatever weird temporary thing we're doing for Corona might be justified... maybe.
