Bad programmers, and THE BET by Google delenda est 05/20/2020, 7:44pm PDT

At a big (or even really a medium-sized) company, developers aren't responsible for making the call about how to respond to customer requests. Management decides how they want to respond.

Leadership directs their underlings, sure. Also, crafty enough irresponsible programmers know how to manipulate management just by saying any solution is high-cost, low value.

My point was that bad engineers are sloppy fuck ups, and unwilling to ever fix their own mistakes (vanity, pride, ignorance etc), or listen to feedback. They absolutely will shit-talk about users being retards for tripping on bugs, or that the client is a nagging bitch in asking for the features that they're bankrolling. They are aware of the problems and complicit in looking down on the customers.

That's just my experience at more than one Big Software Company, YMMV.

The advertising team at Google doesn't really "do deals." They don't really have a sales team in the normal way. Instead, they maintain a platform that customers use.

I'm not aware of advertisers working with programmers especially since they speak different languages. Somebody had to talk to the partners and stoke those relationships at some point. I would be very surprised to see the biggest ad network just sprout out of IT only. Maybe Google has since moved on, outsourced, or whatever. I'll admit I don't work there.

I still see Legal and Marketing as having way more power and prestige in software companies than a Principal Software Architect III does, but YMMV here too.

Dude, Google has like a zillion data centers around the world. They have some handicaps in this race, but lack of local data centers is definitely not one.

I'm not saying they have a lack here. Point is YouTube took a while to spin up to what it is now: development, production, live ops etc. etc.

I'll take one side of that. I bet they shut it down OR spin it off within 10 years.

I'm going to throw out that it will be kept on life support for at least 2 years from when they started it.
My cynical ass sees a 3 year sunset.

How do you sell premium game streaming to TVs in a market filled with phones, Twitch, and new shiny VR? Worst case would be the year-over-year numbers can't be sold by PR as a success.
