I knew the game was dumbed down, as in limiting your squad size and pre-loading equipment. And many of the simplifications were welcome improvements. But jesus christ I was not prepared for the dumbing down to apply to line of sight rules. Shit, the battles in Age of Wonders: Planetfall have more tactical depth than this!
Plus I hate games where your entire turn is make-or-break based on a single dice roll. It's the same thing that ultimately made me shelve Battle Brothers. Give me a game like King's Bounty where the RNG isn't make-or-break, or Battletech where the RNG bullshit is spread out over multiple shots at once.
Still I don't regret having tried it. Now I see how insanely influential this game's mechanics were. The problem is all these newer games did it all better. I definitely like Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus more now that I played nu-X-Com. |
