HOST (Shudder original) by Fullofkittens 09/20/2020, 8:12am PDT
tl;dr: HOST is a short and sweet found footage movie that reminded me of an updated GHOSTWATCH and I recommend it.

At the urging of podcasters everywhere and also my sister Sisofkittens, I checked out HOST, which is an original movie made for the AMC horror streaming service Shudder:

The premise is that a group of young British(?) ladies have a weekly Zoom meetup and at this week's meetup they bring in a medium as a guest and hold a seance. It goes very badly for them.

Should you watch it? If you like found footage horror movies (I do) then absolutely 100% you should. Shudder has a 1-week trial so as long as you click the right buttons in the right order at the right time it's free. (I want to watch a bunch of schlocky horror movies without shitting up my family's Amazon/Netflix watch pages with screaming sorority girls, so I decided to keep paying for the service.)

The other reason you should watch it right now, like, this week, is that this movie answers the question "do we want COVID quarantine content? Or do we not want it?" HOST leans right into quarantine and uses all the signals and signifiers of 2020 Zoom life as a beneficial set of constraints. The beginning of the movie is a screencast of someone starting a Zoom call. I do that like 5, 6 times a day right now. If you are a remote worker right now then this is a horror movie set in your life as it is right now. It's The 2020 Ghost Movie, and if there's a merciful God all this stuff will be a faint memory 2 years from now.

Another thing that's interesting about it is that - because Shudder is a streaming service and has none of the constraints of either feature films or tv broadcasts - they made this movie 56 minutes long. The pacing is great, they spent their money in the right places (there are fx later in the movie and they are good, especially relative to your average found footage horror movie), and instead of padding its length they just end it when it ends. Not only was that a good choice from a storytelling perspective, it means that if you - as I do - have a significant other that is only willing to watch a scary movie if they can watch something light afterward to calm them down, HOST is an ideal movie to play as a home double feature with a comedy afterward.
