Google shuts down paid Chrome extensions by blackwater 09/22/2020, 10:17am PDT
This probably isn't the biggest shutdown Google did this year, but I think it is the funniest.

Devs foolish enough to build paid extensions for Google's browser have two and a half months to prepare for the payment system to get shut down.

It looks like the process for creating new paid apps broke down in March "due to COVID-19" and they've decided not to bring it back.

Oh, and as a parting gift:

There is no way to bulk export your existing user licenses, so you need to have your users help with this part of the migration.

We recommend that you handle license migration in your back-end system, using the Chrome Web Store API. You’ll need to use OAuth 2.0 with your users' consent to access these APIs.

Yeah just implement OAuth 2.0 on your backend and get the consent of every individual user to export their information. Be sure to do it before Google wipes all the information (coming soon). All of this in order to keep making $20 a month on your little snippet of Javascript. In case you were wondering, this is how Google tells you to fuck yourself.

Paid browser extensions are probably mostly shitware. But this is the equivalent of throwing your deadbeat roommate out your apartment, while telling him to secure the services of a qualified mortgage broker and financial analyst in securing new housing. Hilarious and kind of terrible.
